RIP COREY (1971-2010)

The Lost Boys actor Corey Haim has died aged 38, the Los Angeles coroner's office has confirmed.

A spokeswoman said he passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning at Providence St Joseph Medical Centre.

A post-mortem will determine the cause of death and no other details have been released as yet.

The Canadian-born star's first role was in the 1984 hit Firstborn. In recent years, he appeared in reality TV show The Two Coreys.

The series, which also starred Haim's friend Corey Feldman, was cancelled in 2008 after two series.

The pair, who both have battled drug problems in the past, starred in the 1988 movie License to Drive together and became well known for their on and off screen partnership.

After Firstborn, Haim landed a role in the 1985 TV movie A Time to Live and also appeared in several episodes of the TV show Roomies.

He went on to become a teen heartthrob after starring in the 1986 film Lucas, alongside Charlie Sheen and Winona Ryder.

Haim starred alongside Kiefer Sutherland in The Lost Boys, about a group of friends who do battle with a band of teenage vampires.

TESTS

So today we are conduction experiments at Fayes Video & Espresso Bar.
Today's test is to find out whether or not cup volume has a significant effect on the thermodynamics of liquid contained within said cup.

This test came about when a customer stated that they drink the Huge cup of coffee (20oz.) so that the coffee will stay warm.
They only drink 12oz. of the coffee, but the extra liquid keeps that 12oz. warmer longer.

To test this hypothesis we have filled two cups with water, both at 200°F. One Huge (20oz.) and one Tiny (8oz.). Both cups were given lids and put in a area free from drafts.

Both cups were drained of 0.5oz. every 2 minutes for 10 minutes then the drainage increased to 1oz. every 90 seconds for 5 minutes to simulate a human sipping rate.

This left about 2oz. in the Tiny and about 14oz. in the Huge.

The temperature of remaining liquid in the Tiny at the end of the 15 minutes was significantly lower than the temperature remaining in the Huge cup.

Unfortunately, there was no thermometer to check the end results. So further studies will be needed to determine exact temperatures in each cup.

Providing the basic necessities of the drawing practice--pencils, charcoal, pens, markers, ink, and paper--Southern Exposure creates the context while the artists create the content of the drawings. The evening will consist of four one-hour shifts with approximately 30 artists drawing simultaneously each hour. As the drawings are completed they will be hung on the walls and available for purchase for $60 each. The Monster Drawing Rally promises to be an action-packed spectacle you won't want to miss!

The Monster Drawing Rally provides a unique opportunity to watch a drawing come to life, and to purchase a work of art minutes after it's completion. Proceeds from the event provide direct support for Southern Exposure's Exhibitions and Artists in Education Programs.

N.I.N.Y. -- Michael and Mark in NY!

Fayes' own Mike McConnell (look Mike, I can spell your name) and Mark Poulin came to New York this past week because Mark makes great jewelry and participates twice a year in the New York International Gift Fair. Well, it was lovely to see these two out here. I always get excited to see SF people out in NY, in a new setting.

We had dinner, just the three of us, last Friday at Elephant & Castle. Then I stopped by to visit them at the Javits Center on Sunday, after I got let off work early because of a burst dirty water main above the kitchen. Finally, I met up with these two and their friend, Carl, last night, to go to dinner at the Empire Diner. At dinner, we talked a lot about poop, pooping in plastic bags, pooping in your overalls and shaking it out your pants leg, etc. In other words, we were all about the appropriate public dinner talk.

I'll miss all this fecal discussion. Currently, Mike and Mark are headed back on a plane to SF. But I had an excellent time with them while they were here. Good visit, M&M! Also, don't forget to look into adopting Pinky.

Cain Schulte Gallery is pleased to present the group show “ID Redux.” The exhibition brings together the work of one Berlin-based and three Bay-Area artists: Daniel Ochoa, Kirstine Reiner, Michael McConnell, and Lars Theuerkauff.

Portraiture becomes the unifying theme of the four artists' inquiry, the research perimeter for their intervention. The physical appearance becomes a symbol for personal identity, condensed and reduced to a single expression, expanded into the viewer’s mind into an imaginary narrative.

Facial expression and body language are usually considered as suggestive of stories laden with our personal interpretations, thus reducing in one single observed gesture the complexity of the individual. However, one soon realizes that in reality, unlike photographs that do capture an expression in a moment, painted portraits are the negation of the instant, thus raising important issues about time, truth, permanence, and perceived identity.

Daniel Ochoa presents his latest oil paintings, which engage viewers to ponder notions about human consciousness, belonging, randomness. His intense, at time grotesques portraits, raise important questions about assimilation, integration, and culture, while representing the obscurity and complex layering of human emotions.

Kirstine Reiner is the author of a series of expressionist portraits. In these subjects the artist seems to seize upon a secret meaning, an inner space less concerned with a physical likeness or the final outcome, rather striving to achieve an uncensored reaction and interpretation of the model.

The work of Michael McConnell pivots on the collection and analysis of autobiographical stories. His paintings, reminiscent of old photographs, blur the line between the observed and the imagined. A closer observation of playful images of children and animals reveals darker stories of skepticism and failure, layered with narrative possibility.

With great care, Berlin artist Lars Theuerkauff starts from a disarray of paint marks that finally unite in coherent images. The images disappear at close up, lost in a contemporary pointillism that make the images almost accidental. In his work Theuerkauff represents and gives form to the most secret and intimate of human spaces - that of the dream and of the subconscious.

N.I.N.Y. -- The Mexico Edition

¡Hola, San Francisco!

I'm here in Puebla, Mexico, on a six day trip with my honors seminar group. We flew in to Mexico City on Wednesday afternoon and spent the rest of the day touring the central zocalo. We stopped in at the Palacio Nacional to see Diego Rivera's murals, then moved on to the Catedral Nacional. We closed the Mexico City afternoon with a look at the Aztec ruins which lie off to the side of the central square.

That same evening we took a 2 hour bus ride down to Puebla, where we're spending most of our visit, with the exception of two day trips to Cholula and Cuetzalan. I've been having a great time here in Puebla. I was here 3 years ago, the only person out of our 50 person group to have been here before, so I vaguely know my way around the historical district of the city. The legal drinking age here is 18, so we've been strolling around the neighborhood at night, catching live musical performances, drinking micheladas, eating tacos, and getting free shots of tequila from the friendly local residents. Yesterday I discovered Rompope, a sweet alcoholic drink made with eggs, milk and sugar. I'll be bringing some home.

Today we took a trip to Cholula to see some of the churches along the way and visit the partially excavated pyramid and church that are the main tourist attractions in this adorable city. We trekked up over 1000 steps to reach the top of the pyramid, and I purchased a 30 cent necklace made of coffee beans. It smells excellent around my neck.

Tomorrow we take a day trip to Cuetzalan to visit a 'traditional' hospital and some steam baths. Our group is here until Tuesday, when we drive back up to Mexico City and fly back to NYC.

Fayes, I'll try and bring something shipping-friendly back to New York. that I can send home to you. The coffee here is excellent...

N.I.N.Y. -- Here for the Holidaze

And by HERE, I mean New York.

It's gotten super cold here. Even more cold than the cold weather all you people back in the Bay are complaining about. This morning when I left for work, it was a brisk 25 degrees out. I'm hoping for some more snow soon.

Today is my last day of class. Just a video art class in which we're watching everyone's final videos. Mine wasn't terribly amazing. I did a tribute to William Butler Yeats, masterpiece theatre style, with interjected cartoon sound effects and onomatopoeia text. It was silly, but that's the kind of weird humor my video art teacher seems to go for...

I live in a heavily Jewish dorm. We have NYU's only Kosher cafeteria and we host Shabbat dinners every Friday. Currently we have a fire hazard of a Hanukkah set-up placed in the front doorway where it's very susceptible to setting someone's winter coat on fire. For a dorm that doesn't allow toasters or electric kettles, this seems pretty risky.

Next Friday will be Christmas, a holiday I generally enjoy due to the family-time aspect. (We don't do gifts). So this year, to replace family time, I'm working on setting up an itinerary to keep me occupied for the holiday. On Christmas Eve, my friend Gus, a freshman at Columbia, and I will volunteer at a soup kitchen in the morning, go to Scores for a little afternoon entertainment, and see Heath Ledger's final film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, in the evening.

I'm still working out my plans for Christmas. Planning takes time. And don't even ask about New Year's Eve...

On Sunday on the train home from work, a man asked me if I shaved my knuckles, saying they were "extraordinary."
Who lets these people out of the basement?
