As you may know we have some very entrepreneurial people working here at Faye's.
Two of whom you know as Nina and Ray-Ray.
Well, did you further know that Nina and Ray-Ray are starting a local dog walking service? Yes, sir. For the summer before Nina ships off to NYU never to be seen again she wants to make this summer the best eva and Ray-Ray wants to scare up a little scratch to help fund a European voyage. Jet setters through and through the two.

New Release Review + PBJ Style!

Notorious

This is going to be a little harsh. This movie sucked. The characters were one dimensional and self serving. Sean 'Puffy' Combs produced this and you can tell. It is so intent on glamorizing and honoring that you feel like you're being smothered by chinchilla coats and pummeled by gold rings. HOWEVER, Angela Bassett made me cry a little. And this little dude, Marc John Jefferies, was good. Other than those two, the cast was awful. I can understand that fans of Biggie and Brookland will probably eat this right up. The camera work and editing was trite.

A "C" grade -out of pity for this big dude getting shot at 24 years old. If he was still alive I'd give it a "D"

New Release Review ~ PB&J style!

Amy Adams, Viola Davis and Philip Seymour Hoffman put on a great show, but it was Meryl Streep that knocked it out of the park for me. Sure, she's a powerhouse, sure we all love her, but she really blew me away on this one.
The cinematography was subtle and well done in conjuncture with the art direction.

I gave this one B.

Can anyone else play these parts?
DTESS was a solid flick; action packed, intense, updated to be topical with extinction and meltin polar caps and war an shit. Had me bitting my nails till the end. BUT, the end drops off. It needed about ten more minutes of lesson learned kinda drama.
My other complaint was that little boy, Jaden Smith he was HORRIBLE!
I hate little kids acting all mature and shit with one liners.
He's the reason I gave DTESS a C.

FAYES FREAKS AND GEEKS: PATRICK

You may call Patrick a jack-of-all-trades, working with film, comics, music and coffee. He first made his appearance on 18th street behind the deli counter at Bi-Rite, but has been slinging coffee and suggesting movies for Fayes for the past year. 

  His quick wit will keep you on your toes during those early morning commutes, and on Sundays he may be responsible for your evening movie or late night tunes at Dalva.  I asked him some questions about high school and his array of interests... making him one complex coyote.

In high school did you fit into any of the preconceived stereotypes that are often portrayed in movies, tv shows, and the likes? If yes, what group would you say you belonged to?

I moved around  a lot growing up, every year I went to a different school, so it wasn't so much of me being IN a group as it was me observing the groups. I grew up listening to Kool 94.5 FM (AZ) so I thought that was the only music that existed so my heroes were guys like Bo Diddley, Elvis, Little Richard and such. So i kinda tried to dress like them. The punk groups at schools usually thought I belonged to them, but you know school punks, they're all on the chess an soccer team. I thought they were "posers". Really I just wanted to hang out with the pretty girls. But if I was a movie stereotype, it probably would have been a mix of Duckey from "Pretty in Pink" and Nick Cage in "Valley Girl".

You have several tattoos. What was the motivation behind getting them? Do you have any regrets?

I was able to score my older brothers ID when I was 16, so I do regret my first tattoo, a dancing devil, ugh. The others are symbols of some things that have heavily influenced me at the time I got them, but really I regret ALL my tattoos. I should just have  a T-shirt with the symbols instead of ink permanently inside my skin.

In high school did you participate in extra curricular activities? What type of hobbies do you have presently?

I started a "unity club" at one school. On the day of the first meeting there was a school wide brawl over racial tensions and so my group was disbanded and I got detention. They blamed me for "stirring up trouble". I held a rally and I just said that tolerance for racism is not an option and named some names. People got mad and someone shouted "nigger" or "nigger lover" and the punches just started flying. If I remember correctly, some boy went to the ER because he had gotten stabbed in the side with a pencil.

You recently published a zine, that from my reading. was based on actual personal relationships and experiences in your life. After the completion did you have any new discoveries or added stories to expand on, a possible sequel?

I did, but I didn't know how to proceed. I still draw, but I don't think I'll put out another comic zine. My attention has shifted back to film making. That just was the only way I could figure out how to express some of my ideas. Sometimes it's music, sometimes films. That time just happened to be pictures.

Which character on "LOST" do you most associate with? If the series was to create a character for you and you could aide in the creation, what would that be like?

I don't think I associate with any one character. I hate Kate, she never listens and she always screws things up! And I love Ben and Locke, but if there was a character created... oooh! Desmond. That's who I probably can relate to the most.

You've created an Avant-Gard section here at Fayes, what one film would you suggest for customers as a "must see"?

I think a lot of people might be weary to rent from that section, so I would introduce them slowly. "Weekend" is a good one to start with. It's linear, it's stimulating and it can be enjoyed without really knowing what Truffaut was trying to say.

Do you always take your coffee the same way?

Usually I drink an Au Lait, but done like an Americano. Very little sugar.

In your year working at Fayes, any favorite stories?

No one particular event strikes me. I like being constant here in the morning because then I see a lot of the same people and get to know them and what's going on in their world. Right now Nathan Dwyer is trying to give us a scone from Tartine, but he already touched it and I know his hands aren't clean!

Music seems to be an important aspect of your life, do you have a favorite band? Is there any album that you "need" to complete your music collection?

I'm trying to put together a Blues -Nite at a bar somewhere so I've been looking for a particular Snooks Eagin record, but it's REALLY expensive. That and I'd very much like to have a 45 of "Starting Over" by John Lennon.

FREAKS AND GEEKS: MOLLY

Many of you know Molly and her frothy cappuccinos, high energy dance moves, and her quirky sense of humor. What you may not know is that she is a weight lifter, an art maker, a manager at Fayes, and headed down to Australia for a study abroad program.

Over the past years, Molly has proven to be an asset to Fayes and she will be missed tremendously. Before she takes of with a creamy Fosters in hand I asked her a few questions:

In High School what activities and groups did you participate in?

I decided to join the snowboard club at my high school to get closer to a boy I had a crush on. I sold Sees candy to fund our trip. But when I got there, I really hated how uncomfortable the boots felt, so I didn't snowboard and just kinda hung around. The boy later told me he wanted to hang out with me, but he didn't because my friend I was hanging out with annoyed him. That pretty much sums up my involvement in high school clubs.

How do you think growing up in a major city effected you?

I have always dreamt of growing up in a small town, living a life I didn't have here in the city. I dreamt I would go to a huge high school with a football team, and I would sneak out my window to hangout with boys like on "Dawson's Creek", and I would have a front lawn. Actually, having this dream almost cost me my life. I tried jumping out of my second story bedroom window onto a ledge, that was in fact a lot farther away then it appeared, to practice sneaking out to meet my friends. I lost my footing when I landed and almost broke my neck. Does that answer the question well?

You are an only child. If you could have had siblings would you? Would you have preferred a brother or sister and why?

I consider my step brother my sibling! I love Travis and have had so much fun with him over the years. I want to have two kids so that they can learn to share better then I did my first few years without a brother.

What movie best represents your high school experience?

AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhh ... that's like asking me what movie I recommend.

If Fayes named a drink after you, what would it be? What is your favorite coffee drink?

The special Fayes drink I came up with is half iced coffee concentrate and half soy. It is so good!!!!!! I would charge $3.50 for it and call it "camping brew" because I first had it on our camping trip.

You have been with us for a few years now, it will be a big change for Fayes not having you around. Do you think you've changed since working here? And what is your favorite Fayes story?

I've definitely been opened up to a whole different style of music that I wouldn't normally listen to, you know cuz I only listened to 106.1 and 94.9 prior to working here. Also I have made a bunch of friends from working at Fayes that I wouldn't have if I didn't work here. I can't remember my favorite story, there's been so many. I guess good times like dancing behind the counter with Mike and the infamous Tow parties with Nina are always good.

When lifting weights do you listen to music? If so, what? Also what is the hardest thing about weightlifting?

We are not allowed to listen to music while we lift, it is distracting and it's already really loud when a couple of people are lifting (dropping weights, grunting, yelping and such). The hardest part about lifting is when you take some time off and get out of shape and go back to train again and you realize you're not a super hero anymore.

How many scones can you fit in your mouth?

I don't know anything about scones, but if you punch a cheese danish (cheese cloud)  or an almond croissant a couple of times, you can fit those babies in your mouth all at once.

What do you plan on doing in Australia? Do you hope to see a kangaroo?

I plan to see a lot of pretty places, learn to make art on a computer, volunteer with animals, have some sort of design job, make friends and connections with people all over the world, and not get skin cancer. I will see a kangaroo, you can bet your bottom dollar on that.

If Fayes caught on fire and you could only take one thing, what would it be?

It would be Nina's hair because it's really big and poofy and looks like it would catch on fire easily.

I'm Lost

So, I'm totally addicted to Lost now. It all started when I went to a season premier viewing party. We made Mai Tais and a whole Hawaiian meal, complete with Ahi Avocado salsa and soy chips. My old roommates watch the show religiously and since I had the den as a bed room on Wednesday nights I could either watch with them or leave. I would leave because it seemed so predictable to me. "It's just a sociological experiment," I'd always complain, "there's no mystery!"
Fuck was I ever wrong. Polar Bears and smoke monsters?! And what's with that four toed statue?!
I'm enrolled in CCSF online classes and I'm all out of forbearance with my student loans, but every day when I sit down to study I end up getting a bag of chips and zoning out through three or four episodes.
This is ruining my life. I don't call my friends anymore, I'm staying up past midnight, my girlfriend doesn't care about the magnetic force or anyone from flight 815, it's destroying everything that is good in my life. And I don't care.
But here's the thing, it's going to end. I know it's hard to think about, but the show will end. They've all ready said it will only go to S.6. So what do I do when thats over? If I alienate myself from everything thats positive, what is left for me come the series finale?
Any Lost fans out there? We've got to seriously think about this!

congratulations to "these united states" and barack obama on a nice show this morning. the speech was great, everyone looked nice, bush looked cold/grumpy. 

here's to the end of barney's time in the white house. he fulfilled the duties of first dog brilliantly, decorating the white house for the holidays and all. welcome obama labradoodle or whatever our next first man's-best-friend is.
